Shtataxus Learning Centre
Currently under construction, the Shtataxus Learning Centre project marks 10 years of Stqeeye’ board, staff, volunteers and allies advocating for use of traditional land to safely and securely host Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Youth, community and volunteers.
Shtataxus Learning Centre is a building complex located at the Xwaaqw’um estuary, created by Stqeeye’ to support and facilitate traditional education and stewardship, and provide much needed office space. Located near our ancestral village, Shtataxus is both a dream and a responsibility, to steward the land for future generations.
Shtataxus (SH-TA-TA-HUS) refers to the shed style roof that is a hallmark of Quw’utsun traditional buildings.
Phase II
Phase II of the project will be the renovation of the existing 2-story building, upgrading of services and finishing the Outdoor learning space and Canoe shed.
Phase I
Phase I is near completion. The outdoor learning space and canoe shed were funded by the First Peoples Cultural Council and Salt Spring Island Foundation. Cedar paneling was graciously donated by Claire and Guy Hoffman. Buildings were constructed by Dashwood Construction Inc., designed by Donald Gunn Design, and engineered by GT Engineering.
